Original Jazz Classics
(Est. 1982) Created under the Fantasy, Inc. umbrella, Original Jazz Classics has been a tremendously successful program of reissues. Its premise is simple: to present memorable jazz albums with original covers and notes, which have been unavailable for years. The vaults of the Fantasy-affiliated labels Prestige, Galaxy, Milestone, Riverside, Debut, Contemporary, Jazzland and Pablo hold some of the most important jazz ever recorded. Drawing on this wealth of material, Original Jazz Classics has grown to over 1,000 titles.
ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS FEATURED ARTISTS
Art Pepper
There was nothing halfway about alto saxophonist Art Pepper (1925-82). He claimed to have never studied or practiced his horn; disdained inevitable comparisons with Charlie Parker yet embraced the later expressive discoveries of John Coltrane in advance of most of the jazz world.
MOREChet Baker
Few musicians have embodied the romantic, and ultimately tragic, jazz figure as totally as Chesney "Chet" Baker (1929-88). Unschooled yet eloquent in his music, the Baker mystique has only reinforced one of the most haunting trumpet styles and ingenuous approaches to jazz singing.
MOREBill Evans
Few musicians seemed less likely to make an impact on the New York jazz scene in the late Fifties than Bill Evans(1929-80), whose introspective solos and delicate touch were far removed from what was commonly considered "hard bop."
MOREWes Montgomery
Few musicians in jazz history were more innovative, or more unassuming, than guitar legend Wes Montgomery (1923-68). He dispensed with the plectrum and developed an incredible thumb-picking style, and played octave and chordal passages with the fluency and nuance of single lines.
